newly released The Art of Golf Design. The exhibit will be on display
through September 2002.
For this show, courses depicted in Miller's
old-world style landscapes include nine U.S. Open venues: Bethpage
Black (the June 2002 site); Baltusrol; Brookline; Merion; Oakmont;
Pebble Beach; Riviera; Shinnecock Hills and Winged Foot. Other courses
represented in the exhibit are Cypress Point, Pasatiempo, Pine Valley
Sand Hills and The National Golf Links of America.
Golf's Golden Age: Landscapes
by Michael Miller
What was the "Golden Age" of golf course architecture
and why was it important? From 1909 to 1939, America witnessed a
blossoming of new and distinctive courses as never seen before or
since. As World War I gave way to the Roaring Twenties, golf grew
in popularity and stature as Americans took up the sport in vast
numbers. The "Golden Age" saw the birth of a new generation
of golfing legends, crowned by Bob Jones,
who in 1930 became the first and only player to capture the Grand
Slam. This increased popularity wove its way into the American mainstream
through films, literature, toys and games.
As golf in America assumed a new identity, architects came together
to design courses that ultimately changed the way we play the
game. Individuals like Charles Blair Macdonald, Donald Ross, Alister
MacKenzie, A.W. Tillinghast and George Thomas represented the
best of a group of architects who redefined the basic tenets of
design and ushered in a new generation of architecture. Their
approach was innovative, daring, unique and ultimately lasting.
This pivotal and fascinating period serves as the basis of Golf's
Golden Age: Landscapes by Michael Miller. A golf professional
for 28 years and the former Director of Golf at Riviera Country
Club in California from 1993 to 1998, Michael Miller, through
his paintings, celebrates this "Golden Age". Drawing
from period photographs and literature, Miller represents many
of these classic courses as they appeared at the time they were
created.
