The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida commissions a portrait of Samuel Ryder.

Samuel Ryder by Bart Forbes
When asked by Bruce Cassidy, Jr, General Manager of The Concession Golf Club, if I was aware of any works of art that could be appropriate for some special areas of the Clubhouse, I knew the only solution was to commission site-specific paintings.
We chose Bart Forbes as the artist for this project and settled on Samuel Ryder as the subject.
The Client: The Concession Golf Club defines itself as "a Club that honors the history and excellence of the Ryder Cup," and the name refers to one of the greatest moments in sportsmanship, when in 1969 during the Ryder Cup Matches at Royal Birkdale, Jack Nicklaus conceded a putt to Tony Jacklin on the 18th green in the final singles match.

The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin and 25 living Ryder Cup Captains are members, so a contemporary portrait of Samuel Ryder, who donated the solid gold cup for the first official Ryder Cup in 1927, seemed very appropriate.

The Artist: Bart Forbes, over his career spanning more than three decades, has created art for most of America's top magazines including
TIME,
Sports Illustrated and
Golf Digest. Bart has created artwork for a long list of major events including the Kentucky Derby, America's Cup, the Indianapolis 500, Boston Marathon and Olympic Games and numerous PGA tournaments including Pebble Beach, The Players Championship and the Ryder Cup.
The painting: This oil on canvas, measuring 45 x 64 inches (framed) features Samuel Ryder (1858-1936), a prominent English seed merchant and entrepreneur, who sponsored the first biennial golf championship between the best professional golfers from the United States and the United Kingdom. This event, which has now grown to include the U.S. and Europe, is considered the most important team competition in golf.
The original trophy that Ryder is holding has been modified over the years to accommodate additional names. The two players on the left are Walter Hagen and Abe Mitchell, Hagen being the first team captain for the United States and Mitchell being the man who Ryder hired as his private tutor when he took up golf after turning fifty. Mitchell is also the model for the figure who stands atop the trophy.
The building in the background is Gleneagles, where the first "informal" matches were played in 1921.
And now, nearly 100 years later, the "Official" Ryder Cup Matches are returning to this stately venue in 2014.
